Currently offering tours for Saying No: Reconciling Spirituality and Resistance in Indigenous Australian Art

The word “No” does not exist in the majority of the over 200 Australian Aboriginal languages, and where it does exist, this powerful word is reserved for the elders and is used with great care and ceremony. As these languages reach the brink of extinction, indigenous Australian artists are using contemporary art to assert their identity and culture and say no to racism, land theft and colonialism in an urban world.

Academic Focus

This exhibition will introduce students to aspects of Indigenous Australian history, while investigating the contemporary role artists have in contributing to social change.

The Saying No Curriculum Guide was created as a supplementary guide to the exhibition. It includes an introduction to some of the themes that the exhibition addresses as well as pre-visit activities. Please download the Curriculum Guide here.

In order to create a comprehensive understanding of the African Diaspora, MoCADA’s Education Department created Diaspora Diaries: An Educator’s Guide, which provides a discussion on the history of the African Diaspora, presents contemporary artists of African descent, and includes activities for teachers to incorporate into their curriculum. Teachers who schedule a tour can buy Diaspora Diaries for an additional fee of $20.
