Flip to the final page of any issue of The Source Magazine from Sept. 1990 to Jan. 2007 and you’ll get “The Last Word,” the monthly comic in which artist Andre LeRoy Davis hilariously caricatured the most famous (and infamous) figures in hip-hop for rap’s premier publication. Satirizing the self-serious world of ‘90s and early aughts hip-hop, Davis’s illustrations were a sign that an artist was important to the culture — even if he was poking fun at them.
On Saturday, Nov. 8, journalist Timmhotep Aku and curator STORAGEBASED (Denzel Simmons) will be in conversation with André LeRoy Davis at MoCADA, talking about his career as a visual artist, his legendary Last Word column, his contributions to hip-hop journalism under the alias “A.L. Dre”, and his decades-long work as an educator, among other topics.
The first installment of the ARTIFACTS series, the talk, Q&A, and pop-up exhibition will feature objects from the archives including Davis’s art and writing over the years from vintage magazines to DVDs to limited-edition prints all for display and sale.
Come through to hear insights and anecdotes from Davis as we discuss his work and influence while getting an IRL look at some of his creations.
