flix Film Fest! is the longest-running kids’ film festival in Brooklyn. Presented by MoCADA since 2000, this annual, interactive program offers kids and their families access to a free, outdoor, film screening every Friday night in the month of August.
The festival’s biggest highlight is its closing event, which always includes a Sing & Dance-Along presentation of The Wiz, featuring Diana Ross and Michael Jackson, and a costume contest, free popcorn, live performances, free face painting, and more.
This year’s screenings, which are inspired by Black Girl Magic, will continue this tradition and will be presented in partnership with BLERDFEST!, Downtown Brooklyn Partnership, the African Film Festival, Inc., and others. Beginning Friday, August 2, 2019 and every Friday until Friday, August 23, films will be screened at The Plaza at 300 Ashland (at the corner of Flatbush and Lafayette), next to the future home of MoCADA. The notable finale event, which features a screening of The Wiz Sing & Dance-Along, will be held on August 30 at Herbert Von King Park, at 670 Lafayette Avenue, in the heart of Bed-Stuy.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_separator][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]

Formerly known as The KIDflix Film Fest of Bed-Stuy!, which debuted in 2000, KIDflix was the first annual public program created by the newly founded Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts (MoCADA). The Museum’s founder, Laurie Cumbo, who saw an intense need in the community of Bedford-Stuyvesant, for arts programming that both exposed children to exceptional art, and also depicted positive reflections of the African Diasporan heritage these Brooklyn neighborhoods are famous for.
The KIDflix Film Fest! aims to showcase African Diasporan films of the highest quality, in order to expose children and adults to the art of film, as well as to a variety of complex and engaging stories of African Diasporan people that are sorely lacking in mainstream media. KIDflix achieves these goals by offering free, outdoor screenings in the heart of Brooklyn communities including Bedford-Stuyvesant and now, Fort Greene in Downtown Brooklyn.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_single_image image="6116" img_size="1200width"][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][vc_column width="1/2"][vc_column_text]In addition to film screenings, KIDflix also features live performances, face painting, and whenever possible, post-screening Q&As with the filmmakers. It is important that children not only see people who look like them on the screen, but that they also see and hear from the people behind the cameras.
Over the years, The KIDflix Film Fest has introduced thousands of children and adults to exceptional films of the African Diaspora. The free, family-friendly program has screened award-winning films such as Amandla!, Brooklyn Castle, Sounder, The Trials of Muhammad Ali, and War Dance, featured internationally renowned performance groups such as Creative Outlet Dance Theater, and hosted talks with exciting emerging filmmakers such as Terence Nance (An Oversimplification of Her Beauty).
