A museum centered on Art + Education + Social Justice through the lens of Africa + the diaspora

Every December MoCADA Open Call gives emerging, mid-career and established artists the opportunity to expand their portfolios and develop a relationship with the museum by realizing a project in collaboration. In 20+ years, MoCADA has collected hundreds of artist submissions from working artists throughout Africa and the Diaspora.

We invite all creators who identify with our mission to submit ideas, which, if selected, will be funded and produced by MoCADA, and included in our programming.

This includes exhibitions in our galleries, as well as lectures, film screenings, performances, podcasts, community conversations, and workshops and other special events, activations, interventions, and more that illuminate the contributions and multiplicity of the Black experience in dynamic ways.

INTERESTED?  Click the button below to access the application and fill out the questionnaire. Submit by January 1, 2024 for consideration.

1. Please use this form to submit your (1) idea. Only one submission per applicant will be considered. Any proposals that are emailed to MoCADA will be disqualified.

2. Select 1 track for which your application will be considered. Please choose the track that best reflects your proposal.

3. To be considered, proposals MUST be in accordance with MoCADA’s mission. To review MoCADA’s mission, please visit: MoCADA.org/About

4. If you are including a link to a Google drive doc, slides, or other files, please make sure it can be accessed and viewed by anyone. 7. MoCADA will conduct an internal review process that will conclude by February 15, 2024. Select artists and programmers will then be promoted into the second phase of the open call.

8. The second phase of the open will require select individuals who submitted through the artist track to schedule an in-person or virtual studio visit with the MoCADA curatorial team. While select individuals who submitted projects through the programmer track will then be invited to submit a budget for their proposal.

9. There is no need to check in with the MoCADA team during this step of the process. Please be patient as we finalize our decision. If MoCADA is interested in including your work in our calendar, you will be notified by email.

10. After review, MoCADA will select artists and programmers that will be included in our upcoming season. Once accepted, MoCADA will will work directly with participants to finalize timeline, budget, and production.

11. If an artist or programmer is not invited to participate this year, you are welcome to apply again next year. (In some cases MoCADA has invited individuals to participate beyond the upcoming season.)

Thank you and good luck!
