Artist Talk: Francks Deceus + Haitian Art Walking Tour

August 22 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Paying homage to his immigrant experience in America, Franck Deceus’ work is a timely representation of Black bodies in transit, at a time when xenophobia and anti-immigrant sentiments are on the rise.

On the heels of more than a 300,000 Haitians losing their Temporary Protected Status (TPS) overnight and now facing deportation, we center Deceus’ work, “Carib-Import #1”, which encapsulates his Haitian-American experience.

Join us Saturday, August 22 for a conversation with Francks Deceus on home, reconciling the emotional and social effects of immigration, and what it means to be Haitian artist right now. He will be joined by Régine M. Roumain, the Executive Director of Haiti Cultural Exchange.

This event will be followed by a walking tour to Haiti Cultural Exchange to learn more about their forthcoming exhibition in collaboration with the Archive of Alan Lomax (1915-2002). A pioneering ethnomusicologist, Lomax, at at the urging of heralded African American anthropologist and author Zora Neale Hurston,  traveled to Haiti to record the nation’s music and rituals on behalf of the US Library of Congress.
