Film Screening | Dahomey

Join us for a free community screening of a documentary Dahomey presented by MoCADA and MUBI.
Dahomey (2024; 68 minutes; Senegal +France) is a documentary directed by Mati Diop. In 2021, 26 objects from the Kingdom of Dahomey leave Paris and are returned to present-day Benin. How should these art treasures, stolen from ancestors, be received in a country which has reinvented itself in their absence?
This screening will be followed by a panel discussion on restitution, repatriation, building and preserving the archive, and the power of art in this moment. Join our panelists as they build upon our generative practices of reclamation, including Minne Atairu, Researcher and interdisciplinary Artist who is interested in generative artificial intelligence; and Ola Ronke Akinmowo, Artist and Founder of The Free Black Women’s Library. The conversation will be moderated by Cresa Pugh, Assistant Professor of Sociology at The New School for Social Research.
