Lehna Huie | Divine Intervention…

On View: August 17 – November 3, 2024

Location: MoCADA Abolition House, House 7a Nolan Park, Governors Island

SUMMARY

Divine Intervention: Stories of Love and Solidarity by Lehna Huie is a storytelling installation that uplifts the work of cultural workers, organizers and artists – drawing together varying stories of devotion to their communities during the COVID years (2020-present). This installation translates several interview processes into applied textile, collage, photographic and video-based interpretations of daily rituals of care, commitment, and recovery that are rooted in anti-imperialism and decolonization.

This installation was born from Lehna Huie’s solidarity project as a Bandung Residency Cohort 2 artist in 2023. Entitled, Divine Intervention: Healing Modalities: Stories of Love and Solidarity, Lehna developed a collection of portrait-based interviews of incredible Black and Asian artists, cultural workers, and activists who uplift our communities through their relationships, solidarity, and liberation work. Each with roots extending from New York City and beyond, their reflections emphasized daily rituals of care, commitment, healing, and recovery.

Divine Intervention works to uplift representations of diverse spiritual and healing paths utilizing textile, collage, and video-based offerings. All of the interviews and portraits created as part of this project are included in this final installation as part of a living altar at MOCADA’s Abolition House. An interactive, collaborative ritual performance and offering by dear friends Lehna Huie and YaliniDream is also featured.

MoCADA Abolition House is open Friday – Sunday 12-6 PM through November 3, 2024. Admission is free for all ages.
